I put the letter on the kitchen table and waited for mom and dad to get home. Suddenly the idea of a school that would make a "real man" out of me didn't seem so bad!

As soon as my dad was home my mom read him the letter. My heart sank when she said she couldn't part with me. Dad however had read the part about football and making boys into men. "Cindy, you coddle the boy too much, this is his chance to become a real man and have a great future". I overheard mom saying that she had hoped I could one day attend Yale but they could never pay for it. She said that maybe if I could keep up my grades at a school like the academy I could possibly get a scholarship to Yale or Harvard. California, Here I come!

It turned out to be real and I was called into the office at West Haven High and told they had my paperwork for transfer to Sunnyvale Academy starting on January 2nd. The principal himself came out to shake my hand. He knew of the Academy and said he was proud that student from West Haven had been accepted there. He asked me then if I was going to be a doctor, lawyer or scientist later in life. I just told him my future would be in computers and he seemed pleased. If he only knew! He also said one more thing. "I wonder when Sunnyvale went Coed"?
